Top bands play at New Year’s bash
19 December 2008
Freshlygroud will belt out their popular songs, ranging from indigenous African folk music and jazz, to more contemporary sounds

Gang of Instrumentals and Freshlyground are just two of the bands lined up to party in the new year at Mary Fitzgerald Square - and entrance is free.

MORE than 30 000 people are expected to attend this year's annual New Year's Eve Party at Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown on Wednesday, 31 December.

Now in its fourth year, the bash is organised by the City and SABC2 to help improve the quality of life of Joburg residents, and to ensure they have a safe New Year.

"This event is going to be the best because all the safety precautions are taken care of and the line up of performers is the best," said the public relations officer for the event, Robyn Jeevanantham.

There will be a stage for live performances, and the entertainment line-up includes Freshlyground, Gang of Instrumentals, Bleksem, Howza and KB.

"We are super excited to do this concert; it has been a dream for many years," said Freshlyground, the popular band. "The line-up is great and we are preparing some new, exciting stuff for the audience that will be there and those who will watch it on TV."

Security measures will be tight and no-one will be allowed into the venue with alcohol or weapons; however, there will be a beer garden for those who want to welcome the New Year with a toast.

Law enforcement agencies will be on site to keep the peace, and emergency management services will be on hand in case of emergencies. The party will be broadcast live countrywide on SABC2. The concert will start at 6pm and carry on until 2am. Entrance is free.

The New Year's Eve Party is part of the Joburg Carnival, which will start at Berea Park in Berea and at Pieter Roos Park in Parktown. The two carnival parades will meet in Kotze Street in Hillbrow and continue to Newtown, where the party will begin.

The troupes will travel along Empire Road, Claim Street, Catherine Avenue, O'Reilly Road, Joubert Street, De Korte Street, Bertha Street, Nelson Mandela Bridge, Jeppe Street and Miriam Makeba Street.
