2009-02-04: Johannesburg Metro Police Department strike resolved Print E-mail

THE City of Johannesburg is committed to sound relations with its unions, hence its swift move to address the issues that led to this week’s strike action.  In  light  of the decisions made below, the City believes that the reasons  for  the  JMPD strike have been fully addressed and we believe the strike  has  now  come  to  an  end  with  services resuming as normal from Thursday, February, 5, 2009.

Based on the union demands the following action has been taken:

1.  Suspension of Manager: Licensing
Regarding  this matter, we would like to indicate that the City has since employed  the  services  of  an external investigator to investigate this matter  and to advise the City, as a matter of urgency, whether there are grounds  on  which  to  consider  whether  or  not  to proffer charges of misconduct  against  the  mentioned  employee  whilst  the  investigation continues.

In  this regard we would request that you provide us, in writing with the names  of  your  members  or  officials  who  would  assist  in providing information relevant to this investigation.

Please be advised that the City has resolved to suspend the mentioned employee with immediate effect.

2.  Suspension of Deputy Director: Internal Affairs
The explanation above bodes for this employee as well. He has been suspended with immediate effect.

3.  Stop employment of pensioners
The City has taken a decision to stop this practice and hereby informs you that effective immediately, no person who has retired will be employed by JMPD.  In this respect, all the current contracts of “pensioners” will run to finality and will not be renewed and or extended beyond their current tenure.
