New number plates start with BB
30 November 2010

A security feature has been incorporated into the new Gauteng number plates to help stop fraud and the use of false plates.

THE new aluminium vehicle number plate series for Gauteng has been revealed, marking the end of the previous series, which is being stopped at the ZX prefix.

The new series, starting at BB 01 BB GP, will be issued to all new cars from 30 November. It contained a distinctive security feature that comprised a continuous, unbroken wave mark or image running horizontally on the white, retro reflective plate surface, said Ismail Vadi, the MEC for roads and transport Gauteng.

He was speaking at the launch of the new number plates today, at the Protea Hotel in Midrand.

“It is important to note that motorists will be able to keep their old registration numbers as the new number plate series is mandatory only for newly registered vehicles and for transfers of ownership of second-hand vehicles.”

He added: “The Gauteng department of roads and transport has embarked on several projects to improve its effectiveness in the delivery of public services and to reduce crime. The motor car number plate is an essential instrument in this plan of action [and] we take it for granted.”

Number plates were a regulatory tool; therefore, no vehicle was allowed to be on the road without a registered number plate or licence disc, with of which were essential instruments for law enforcement agencies.

Fraud could not be detected on the ordinary number plates, said Vadi. “Our government has noted the ease with which number plates can be illegally obtained to conduct criminal activities.”

False or fraudulent number plates facilitated the export of stolen vehicles to neighbouring countries, the use of vehicles in crimes such as household burglaries, robberies and hijacking, as well as the illegal use of one number plate on a number of cars, he explained.

“The new plates are comparable in price to the current prices of number plates. They will be available to the public at no additional cost.”

Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane would be given the first number plate in the new series, he concluded.
