It’s time to honour women

There are plenty of activities planned for Women’s Day, 9 August, with a fun run, a soccer match and zoo visits taking centre stage.

ATHLETIC events, zoo visits and a stadium rally are planned for Women’s Day on 9 August, to honour the contribution of women to building and developing South Africa. The day celebrates all that women have achieved and all that they strive for.

 

The zoo
There is plenty of activity at the zoo on Women's Day
The Johannesburg Zoo has invited over 1 000 women and children from welfare centres and community church organisations. The activities will start at 10am and visitors are promised an exciting lin- up of live performers.

 

The festivities form part of the zoo’s 67 Day community service campaign that started on 18 July, Mandela Day. Through this campaign, the company aims to bring some 10 000 from poor areas for a visit to the zoo.

Totalsports Ladies Race
For energetic women, the Totalsports Ladies Race will start at Roosevelt High School at 8am. This five or eight kilometre fun run or walk is hosted by the Zonkizizwe Athletics Club. Roosevelt High School is at 1 Thibault Street, Rooseveldt Park extension.

Entry for the race is already closed but people can go and offer their support for those who will be participating. For every entry that it received, Totalsports donated R3 to a charity chosen by the Zonkizizwe Athletics Club. All participants will receive a medal and there are other prizes for winners.

The Soweto Football Association will honour the memory of Zodwa Khoza and her contribution to soccer development with the Zodwa Khoza Memorial Cup. The tournament will take place at the Nike Football Training Centre in Pimville.

Four women’s teams will compete: Croesus Ladies, Wits Ladies, Logos Ladies and Fabulous Ladies.  The winners will get R6 000, a floating trophy, 20 gold medals and a full playing kit. The runners-up will get R 3000, 20 silver medals and a full playing kit.

 

The Zodwa Khoza Cup
The Zodwa Khoza Memorial Cup will played in Pimville
Zodwa Khoza was the daughter of the chairperson of the Premier Soccer League, Irvin Khoza. She was also the brand manager for Orlando Pirates when she passed away in 2006.

 

Lenasia
Another Women’s Day celebration will be at the Lenasia Civic Centre in the City’s Region G. Under the theme, It Is Our Time, the event will honour and appreciate the role that women play in communities, homes, organisations and the country as a whole.

This year, the official national celebrations organised by the Department of Women, Children and People with Disabilities will be held at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.

The theme for this year’s celebration is Working Together to Enhance Women’s Opportunities for Economic Empowerment. The event will be attended by the president of the country, Jacob Zuma and the minister in the Department of Women, Children and People with Disabilities, Lulu Xingwana.

The 2011 National Women’s Day celebrations will be held in honour of Mama Bertha Gxowa and Mama Albertina Sisulu, the two women who passed away this year and were part of the historic anti-pass march to the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956.
