SAFETY is one of the paramount issues amongst Johannesburg residents. With crime continuing to be a contentious issue in the City, the City of Joburg's Public Safety youth Public Safety Youth Focal Point (EMS and JMPD) recognizes the role of young people in improving public safety and thus will be celebrating Safety Month by embarking on out-of-school and unemployed youth within the Kliptown community, targeting youth between ages of 14 and 35 on Thursday, 23 February 2012 from 10am to 2pm.
The City of Joburg has a large number of youth living in difficult conditions which lead to vulnerability and desperation conditions. As a result of this, the City took this opportunity to empower its youth.
The day will develop Johannesburg youth in various aspects of Public safety such as; Basic First Aid, human trafficking, public safety career awareness, public safety bi-laws, and a safe environment where City’s residents and business can live and operate free from crime and emergencies. "This is an initiative taken by the City in building a safe, secure Joburg towards Growth & Development Strategy 2040", said Lufuno Maphagela EMS.
EMS and JMPD Youth Focal Points and the departments outreach and PEER units will facilitate and educate youth on human trafficking, road safety awareness, basic first aid training and Fire safety tips.
The entire program is aimed at reaching about 5000 in and out of school youth in the City of Johannesburg.
The program will also roll-out on the 27th February 2012 at Realogile high school in Alexandra (Region E).
