THE City of Johannesburg is committed to building an integrated transport system. The recently adopted Growth and Development Strategy (GDS) commits to make public transport, walking and cycling modes of choice.
Based on the GDS vision, the Mayoral Committee agreed in October 2011 to investigate unbundling Metrobus.
The City is currently initiating processes of consultation and further investigation. The process will include high levels of consultation with all stakeholders including employees, commuters and Joburg residents and will comply with all relevant legislation including the Municipal Systems Act, Municipal Financial Management Act and Labour Relations Act.
In undertaking the consultation on the future possibilities for Metrobus, the City remains cognizant of the importance of:
- Improved provision of bus services to increasing numbers of Joburg residents;
- Providing opportunities for broad based black economic empowerment including in respect of Metrobus employees, there transforming historic ownership patterns in the transport sector and
- Ensuring the financial sustainability of Metrobus.
The City is also working with other public transport modes and spheres of government to improve integration between public transport modes together with walking and cycling.
