2008-04-18: JMPD's SMS service
The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) has an SMS number for motorists to use in order to check if they have any outstanding fines from their very own cell phones.
The SMS service works in the following easy steps:
First motorists register on the system by SMSing the word 'register' space identity number to 34010 from that particular cell phone only.
Once the motorist receives a confirmation of registration, the word 'fine' can be SMSed to 34010 at any time.
A summary and value of all the outstanding fines will be displayed.
Should a motorist wish to further view or pay their fines, they can log on to www.payfine.co.za.
Alternatively use the cashier services at the respective Metro Police Departments or visit any ABSA Bank (Acc No. 4054398332 Branch code 637956, Reference number: your traffic fine number)
Fines can also be checked via the same process for Cape Town, Free State, Swelendam and Paarl.
The costs involved in the service are as follows:
R2 per SMS to register
R2 per SMS for enquiries
This service will no doubt go a long way towards making it more accessible and convenient for motorists to check their outstanding fines. This is in view of the fact that there are approximately 30 million cell phone users in South Africa (which constitutes 63% of the population) as compared to approximately 3.6 million internet users which constitutes 7.6 % of the population.
