2008-05-21: Property owners urged to check rates valuation before looming deadline

There are only six left for property owners to lodge objections to property valuations and confirm property categories for the new rates that will take effect from 1 July 2008. The cut-off date for the lodging of objections is 27 May 2008.  "There have been relatively few objections thus far", says Werner Savari, Director: Valuations Services.

"Either residents are happy with their new valuation or they are just slow in responding. With 776,786 entries, of which 154,467 are individual sectional title units which will for the first time be rated individually on the provisional general valuation roll one must assume that there will be some inaccuracies.  We would therefore encourage property owners to confirm that they are satisfied with the valuations and that their property categories are correctly reflected on the new valuation roll. We want to appeal to all to ensure that if they have an objection it is lodged as soon as possible to ensure correct billings from July." he said.

Property owners must confirm:

the new valuations and if they believe that it reflects a fair valuation of the market value of a property - on which the new rates will be based. The new valuations are based on a combination of the land value and improvements.
the category of property as this determines applicable rates
All property owners should have by now have received a letter confirming the new valuation. If they have not they must urgently confirm their valuations at a Customer Services Centres at the Metro Centre, Midrand, Lenasia, Ennerdale, Roodepoort, Jabulani, Randburg, Springfield, Sandton, Thuso House or go to the website www.joburg.org.za.

Objection forms can also be collected at any of the Customer Services Centres or downloaded from www.joburg.org.za.
