2008-08-12: Alert to residents
JOHANNESBURG Water (JW), the water and sanitation service provider for the City of Johannesburg wishes to warn customers across the city against unscrupulous contractors or agents claiming to represent the company.
This comes after JW received several calls from concerned residents, mainly from Glenvista, complaining that they have received calls from agents claiming to represent JW wanting to test or confirm the quality of their tap water inside their properties. It should be pointed out that water samples for the city are taken by qualified JW employees with identity cards and branded vehicles.
The quality of Joburg's tap water has been rated as amongst the best in the world. To ensure that this status is maintained, JW routinely samples over 500 drinking water samples per month. Tap water samples are taken from the bulk supply to reservoirs and across the City including samples from informal settlements. The samples are taken to JWs Cydna Laboratory, a SANAS accredited facility where 41 determinants are tested and analysed.
Through this rigorous testing and monitoring process JW is able to respond quickly to any water quality problems and ensure that the quality of every drop of the more of the billion litres of water that passes through our network per day is well within the SABS Standard for Class One Drinking Water.
Should residents be approached by these unidentified agents they are advised to report them to relevant law enforcement agencies.
JW condemns this kind of action and behaviour as it is not only malicious and unethical but a disservice to the residents of the city.
