2008-08-22: Johannesburg Water employee shot on duty

JOHANNESBURG WATER (JW), the water and sanitation service provider for the City of Johannesburg wishes to express its sincere condolences to the family of Tienie du Plessis, JW foreman for 30 years, who was shot on duty at Zandspruit informal settlement last night at around 19h30. He later died on the operating table at Olivedale Clinic.

This untimely loss of life is unfortunate, especially as Mr du Plessis lost his life while providing much needed basic services to Zandspruit informal settlement area. At the time of the incident the deceased and his team were fixing a valve which had resulted in the area being without water when he was robbed of his cellular phone, personal items and shot by unidentified people. The perpetrators did not only take a life of a valuable and dedicated JW employee but have also taken a life that was providing access to basic services such as water and sanitation to Zandspruit community and other informal settlements areas across the city.

JW feels deeply for the family in this time of grief and loss and we have assigned officials to deliver our condolences on behalf of the City of Johannesburg, Member of the Mayoral Committee, councilor Rosslyn Greef and Board of Directors to the family and relative of the deceased.

The matter has been reported to the police who have launched an investigation and JW wishes to appeal to residents to come forward with information to assist the police in their investigations.

JW condemns this kind of action and behaviour as it is not only criminal and inhuman but a disservice to the residents of the city.
