2008-08-28: City prepares to launch sports council

By the end of September 2008, Joburg will have established seven new local sports councils to represent the City in the soon to be launched Gauteng Sports Council.

“This is to ensure a sustainable structure that will assist all those involved in local sports development with sound implementation plans, quality training, sports programmes and adequate use of facilities” says Mrs Pilisiwe Twala-Tau Executive Director for Community Development in the City.

She said the Sport and Recreation Directorate will be embarking on extensive consultation in each Region of the City and called upon all sports bodies and their affiliates in the City to participate.

“Meetings will be held either in the mornings or evenings in the Rabie Ridge, Danie van Zyl, Roodepoort, Jabulani, Sandton, Southern Suburbs, Lenasia and Ennerdale civic centres”, says Twala-Tau.

Councillor Nandi Mayathula-Khoza, Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Development, says, “There is a dearth of talent in our communities that can be discovered and nurtured through grassroots structures that will implement programmes and create opportunities for participants to compete on the international stage”.
