2008-09-01: Pensioners living in sectional title properties given until end September

THE City's Member of the Mayoral Committee responsible for Finance and Economic Development, Councillor Parks Tau, has announced an extension to the deadline for rates rebates applications for pensioners who live in Sectional Title properties.

Tau made the announcement during the monthly Council meeting on Thursday last week (28 August 2008).

The deadline for submission of all rates rebate applications was 31 August 2008. However, said Tau, as a result of problems with getting addresses from Sectional Title property owners, some pensioners who tried to apply for a rates rebate were turned away from the Customer Service Centers as they did not have their account numbers yet.

"This should not have happened and managers concerned have been requested to address the matter immediately," he said.

"The City is pleased to announce that the deadline for rates rebate applications for pensioners living in Sectional Title properties will be
extended from 31 August 2008 to Tuesday 30th September 2008 to accommodate pensioners who may have been disadvantaged by this," he said.

He urged all pensioners living in Sectional Title properties and who felt they could qualify for a rates rebate to act immediately and submit their application forms to any Customer Service Centre.

To qualify for a rebate, pensioners must
• be 60 years or older;
• own and live in the property to which the rates are applicable and either
• be dependant on a National Security Grant (qualify for a100% rebate);
• have a gross monthly income is less than R5 000 (to qualify for a 100% rebate)
• have a gross income of between R5 000 and R9 000 (to qualify for a 50% rebate)

Application forms for pensioner's rates rebates can be
• collected from any of the City's Customer Service Centres; or
• downloaded from the City's website (and click on the house icon on the top left-hand side of the page).
