2008-12-08: City condemns illegal strike
TODAY, SAMWU affiliated City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) employees embarked on strike action. This is an illegal strike and as such, management condemns such action, which puts people's lives at risk.
As a matter of fact, the City has an existing court order against EMS staff's involvement in any strike action
Therefore, this action by EMS is regarded as unprotected strike in terms of the Labour Relations Act.
Contingency measures have been put in place to ensure that no life or property is compromised during this illegal activity.
An urgent meeting is currently underway, between management and the union leadership to try to resolve the issues.
During an unprotected strike the principle of "no work, no pay" is applied to all participating employees. The employer also retains the right to take disciplinary action against striking workers.
The City therefore urges all Emergency Management Services employees to return to work and avoid disruption of service delivery.
