27-08-2014: Johannesburg Arts Alive International Festival welcomes 3rd Annual Dance Day South Africa to their 2014 Programme
The Johannesburg Arts Alive International Festival, in partnership with Business Education & Arts Mentorship; City of Joburg and Southern African Association of Youth Clubs is hosting the 3rd Annual Dance Day South Africa at the Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown on 6 September 2014.
Dancers and lovers of dance of all ages from across the country are invited to come share their creative expression through dance and movement. The aim of the event is to bring people together and to celebrate the art form as a communication medium and a fun tool for a healthy lifestyle.
“Dance is a South African cultural staple. We dance when we protest; we dance when we celebrate; we create a new dance style to every new South African song. And we used dance as a tool for social cohesion during the 2010 FIFA World Cup (Diski Dance),” says BEAM Executive Director and Choreographer, Itumeleng Hlapane. “We believe that expanding choices for people and creating equal opportunities are essential ingredients for sustainable human development. This day is a testimony of equal opportunities for creative people and art supporters.”
The Annual Dance Day is positioned as a fun family day and the end result will be a flash mob created by top SA choreographers for all those who come for the day. Choreographers include Quintus Jansen (Strictly Come Dancing and So You Think You Can Dance); Tumi Trent Tladi (So You Think You Can Dance Choreographer and Redbull beat battle judge): Sello Modiga (internationally acclaimed Pantsula choreographer); Charlie Van Rooyen and Nosiphiwo Samente (both So You Think You Can Dance SA season 3 finalists and choreographers).
Choreographers will teach all attendants a simple, fun and energetic routine in between performances from various dance companies such as Prophelaz (2013 Redbull Beat Battle winners), Freeze Frame Crew (2014 Redbull Beat Battle champions) and the internationally acclaimed Pantsula dance company Real Action Pantsula amongst others. VUZU presenter Shelton Forbes will be the MC for the day. There will be clothing stalls and exhibitions as well as a product give away from CONVERSE. For those hoping to enroll for dance or arts studies, there will be an information centre with packs from The National School of the Arts, Business Education and Arts Mentorship and other institutions.
Also supported by National Arts Council, Converse, Stage and Company and Carry on Projects, the 3rd Annual Dance Day South Africa is an initiative that encourages South Africans to dance!
