19/07/2016: Joburg Mayor reaches out to todds and elderly for Mandela Day
The City of Johannesburg Executive Mayor, Councillor Parks Tau on Monday, 18 July 2016, reached out to elderly and toddlers in Soweto to commemorate Mandela Day.
He begun his day in partnership with Lenovo by handing out laptops and toys to daycare centres that are participants in the Vulindlel’eJozi digital skills training initiative for toddlers. Children at Funda Daycare in Molapo, Ponnys Daycare and Olwazini Daycare centres, both in Dlamini, welcomed Mayor Tau in song while others showcased their hand at operating digital toys.
"I was looking forward to seeing the children showing off a thing or two of their digital skills - doing shapes and colours. Johannesburg is fast becoming a smart city and its important to bring along our children as we move towards this future," Mayor Tau said before heading to the Ethuteng Old Age Home in Meadowlands.
Mayor Tau delivered hot meals and blankets for the elderly who enjoyed and apprciated meeting the leader they referred to as their "son".
"Today was indeed about helping those in need and putting a smile on their faces - just as our former South African President Nelson Mandela used to and even sacrifised a significant part of his life for our liberation and freedom.
"Our young ones and the elderly are mostly in need of our love and generosity at all times - hence taking time out to spend with them was more than fulfilling," Mayor Tau said.
"The Mandela Day also presented an opportunity to assess the impact of the City's programmes for our early childhood centres and centres for the elderly - and to receive their feedback," he said.
Mayor Tau ended the day with a meeting with former South African President Thabo Mbeki to receive counsel on his bid for the Presidency of the world body, the United Cities and Local Governments.
