Today, I was pleased to officially hand over keys to the new tenants of Bokamoso Social Housing Project.
The project comes after the Johannesburg Social Housing Company (JOSHCO) successfully completed Phase 1 of the development, providing 255 units for families and single occupation. As a result, 37 beneficiaries will move in while completion on Phase 2 will bring the total number of units to 588.
Joining me at today’s official opening of the project were the MMC for Housing, Cllr Meshack Van Wyk, JOSHCO CEO, Anthony Ngcezula and JOSCHO Board chairperson, Tumelo Mlangeni.
The Bokamoso Social Housing Project will provide safe and affordable accommodation for residents with a gross monthly household income between R1500 and R15000.
While the housing backlog has rendered thousands of our residents to deplorable living conditions, the City continues to work tirelessly towards ensuring to effect positive change for our most indigent communities.
This all forms part of Diphetogo we promised to bring to communities throughout Johannesburg. As part of our commitment to bringing change to communities, earlier this year, Council approved a resolution to make 71 City-owned properties available for the purpose of creating quality low cost income housing within the Inner City. This is in addition to the 13 other such properties which were made available for the same purpose late last year.
This will not only go a long way to providing many of our residents with the dignity of quality affordable housing, but will also help create needed jobs within the City.
