The Library Information Service (LIS) of the City of Joburg is responsible for, among others, promoting literacy to all the residents of the City through various programmes and workshops run in the City Libraries.
This is done to assist residents in bridging the digital divide, as well as to enable them to be connected globally, in line with one of the City’s priorities of being a Smart City.
Initiatives towards this priority include, among others, the installation of free Wi-Fi in most of the City libraries, and implementing e-Learning programmes that are targeted at different sections of the community.
The e-Learning training programs in the City include the facilitation of digital entrepreneurship skills workshops for SMME’s and upcoming entrepreneurs, particularly the youth, in line with the City’s priority to promote economic growth of the City through SMME development.
Since 2016, these workshops have been held in various regional libraries in Region A, B, D, E, and F with encouraging numbers of SMMEs participating.
Due to the success of these workshops, LIS has on behalf of the City of Joburg, partnered with Livity Africa: Digify Africa through Digify Bytes (supported by Facebook) to facilitate a half day face-to-face workshop targeted at growing businesses through online tools using mobile devices or the e-Learning services in libraries.
To promote and ensure access for all residents of the City, the workshop is free to all established entrepreneurs or SMME’s.
The workshop will equip attendees with key insights and examples of the best use of online marketing tools, such as Facebook and Instagram for entrepreneurs and SMMEs to improve the success of their business offering.
