Three City libraries to close temporarily for repairs, maintenance and upgrading
The major renovations will include, among others, repairs of structural cracks, painting of interior and
exterior walls, waterproofing of the roof, improvement of plumbing and electrical supply, and cutting down
of overgrown trees around the library.
Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Community Development, Cllr Nonhlanhla Sifumba stated
“The decision to close these libraries was taken to comply with the Occupational Health and Safety
standards that are necessary for occupation of any facility. As a City we cannot expose our staff and
residents to unsafe conditions”.
The Community Development department will be working tirelessly to ensure that the closure periods are
minimized to ensure access by the residents of the City.
We recognize that libraries are no longer only used as places to collect books and other reading materials,
but that they also offer reading programmes for adults and children, and internet facilities to bridge the
digital divide for the residents of the City. I appeal therefore to our residents to be patient with us during
these times.
“Once again, I would like to apologise for the inconvenience and the disruption of library and information
services to the people of River Park during this time. As a City, we are committed to offering services in a
manner that ensures meaningful redress” stated Sifumba.
