Good food, good design, good times – these are the ingredients for a great Sunday. And Market on Main promises heaped servings of all.
A CHIC new food and design market opened on Sunday, 23 January, and will operate every Sunday from 10am to 3pm.

FashionMind-blowing designs will also be on show at the marketMarket on Main, as it is called, focuses on local, natural and organic produce. “The interest in food and design markets is booming. Market on Main will appeal to serious foodies, general food lovers, families and friends that like sharing good food and local music,” explains Jacques van der Watt, one of the people responsible for bringing the venture to life.
The organisers are hoping that it will serve as a tool for regional economic development, as well as a way of supporting small businesses which create local food systems by sourcing their produce directly from local farmers.

Market on Main is also striving to be unique in a city brimming with markets. “We will have Ethiopian food, morogo, bunny chow, vegan cupcakes, high fashion and beautiful ceramics all under one roof. Where else can you get that?” asks Van der Watt.

Some 29 stalls will be selling their wares on Sundays; they include: Avant Gardener, with indigenous plants in ceramic or concrete pots; Bakerella by the Cupcake Factory, offering 1950s-style sweets, treats and baked goods; Eat Your Heart Out, making kosher hotdogs, salads, paninis and cakes, among other things; Firefly, featuring handmade deli-style pickles, preserves, relishes, patés and tapenades; and Poppins, a children’s clothing label.

This variety of produce is only one of the reasons Van der Watt believes Market on Main will be a success. Live music and the character of the location will, he feels, contribute to making it an unmissable Sunday outing.

The market is at Arts on Main in eastern Johannesburg, where an early 1900s bonded warehouse was converted into the popular venue it is today. It is a blend of studio, commercial, residential and retail spaces, which the market’s organisers feel will give their venture that extra edge.

“The lovely olive and lemon trees in the courtyard, masterfully renovated warehouse spaces and reputable galleries provide a backdrop to the market that is picturesque and very prestigious,” adds Van der Watt.

Arts on Main is at 264 Fox Street, City and Suburban. For more information or for directions, visit the Market on Main website.
