Roads will be closed around the Wanderers Club for the annual JP Morgan Corporate Challenge. The road race winds through the suburbs of Melrose and Birdhaven.
ROADS in the northern suburbs of Illovo and Melrose Arch will be closed on Thursday, 3 March for the annual JP Morgan Corporate Challenge.

In 2010, there were 12 862 participants from 405 companies; organisers are expecting the number to almost double this year. Participants must belong to a company to take part in the race, and they are urged to wear company T-shits, so that they can be identified.

There will be a walkers’ race and a runners’ race, taking place simultaneously. Participants can either walk or run, as they can take as long as they like to finish. The gun for the 5,6km race will go off at 6.30pm.

Start line
The runners’ and joggers’ race will start in Venus Street close to the corner of Greenacres Drive. The route goes down the street, from north to south, away from the Wanderers Club, turning left into Tyrwhitt Avenue and right into Melrose Street.

Walkers will start in Wingfield Avenue, on the corner of Greenacres Drive, turning left in to Greenacres, right around the park, continuing on Greenacres Drive. They will go right into Melrose Street and the two starting groups will merge 200 metres before the one kilometre mark. From here the route is the same for all.

It goes up Melrose Street, right into Cecil Avenue, left into Tyrwhitt Avenue, right into Tottenham Avenue, and right into Jellicoe Avenue. Then continues right into Jameson Avenue, left into Tyrwhitt Avenue, left in to Reform Avenue, left into Jellicoe Avenue, right into Jameson Street, right into St Andrew Street, right into Reform Avenue and left into Jellicoe Avenue.

It goes left into Victoria Avenue, right into St Andrew Street into Bute Avenue, and left into Venus Street.

Finish line
Athletes will enter the Wanderers Club through the gate in Venus Street, turn right on to the pathway, running down and parallel with the first cricket field. They will turn left towards the tree and on to the cricket field.

The first runner in expected to cross the finish line at 6.46pm and the last one is expected to arrive at 8pm.

General parking will available at James and Ethel Gray Park and RH Henderson Park on the corner of Venus Street, Tyrwhitt Avenue and Melrose Street. Parking for the media, events management officials and VIPs will be at the Wanderers Club, next to Corlett Drive, at the Wanderers rugby field and golf course.

Residents in the affected area are asked to make use of the following three access streets into Melrose and Birdhaven during the temporary road restrictions:

North Street from Oxford Road (avoid Rudd Road);
Greenacres Drive from Edgewood Avenue and Melrose Street; and
Cecil Avenue from Glenhove Road.
All temporary road restrictions have been approved by Joburg metro police and roads will be back to normal directly after the race. Residence are urged to call the ER24 national call centre on 084 124 should they need medical assistance.

The organising committee is working to ensure that residents, visitors and participants are not inconvenienced.
