Joburg bids farewell to its Comrades warriors
On Sunday 31 May, 59 runners from the City will line up for the Comrades Marathon, dubbed the ultimate test of human endurance. They are warriors of the road, ready for the gruelling 88km up-run from Durban to Pietermaritzburg.
The City treated the runners to a sumptuous breakfast this week at an official send-off ceremony.
Conveying his message of support, Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Community Development Councillor Chris Vondo, who is an avid sportsman, reminded runners of the responsibility they carry as the city’s ambassadors.
“When you go out there, people are going to see you as the City of Johannesburg. Make sure you display good behaviour, make us proud, represent and carry Johannesburg’s flag with pride and enjoy responsibly.”
The team includes Derrick Oliver from City Power, a legend with 31 Comrades finishes, Thomas Chauke from the JMPD, a veteran with 28 finishes and 14 novices.
