Newly retired former Bafana Bafana captain Steven “Schillo” Pienaar continues to give back to the community that raised him, Westbury, through his annual Steven Pienaar Community Cup.
This much-needed distraction for this crime ridden and drug-infested Johannesburg community offers budding football players the opportunity to showcase and hone their skills in the presence of former and current football players and the community at large.
The 13th edition of the tournament will kick off, for the preliminary rounds, on Saturday, 9 June 2018, and the following day, Sunday, 10 June, 2018 at Westbury and Riverlea Soccer grounds. Teams from the south of Johannesburg will be pitted against one another in a grueling tournament that will be played on two consecutive weekends.
On Youth Day, June 16 2018, all junior teams, from under 9 to under 15, will play their final games at Westbury grounds and on Sunday, June 17 2018, the senior teams, will battle it out for the grand prize, yet to be announced, at the Bill Jardine Stadium.
The tournament has grown in leaps and bounds, having started with just eight teams in the inaugural tournament back in 2003. The 2018 tournament will have a total of 120 junior teams taking part and 24 senior teams.
The cherry on top is the addition of ladies football to the tournament. Girls and young women from surrounding communities will also be given the opportunity to showcase their skills and maybe fulfill their dreams of one day playing for the national team.
