The City of Johannesburg's Finance department has warned customers of a month-long delay in the delivery of their municipal accounts. The delay would affect statements for the month of July, as a result of a strike by South African Post Office employees since 6th of July 2018.

The City has advised residents who are facing challenges in receiving their monthly municipal accounts to either visit or call Customer Service Centres with their account details to get immediate help.

Customers have also been advised to obtain balances and due dates on their municipal statements by dialling the Call Centre on 0860 (Joburg) 562874. They should have no hassles in retrieving this information.

MMC for Finance, Cllr Funzile Ngobeni, expanded on the impact the delay may have on residents saying: “We are aware this interruption has an impact on our resident's ability to budget and pay their monthly rates and service charges. This has brought to light the fact that our residents need more than one medium of receiving their municipal account statements."

In response to the unexpected turn of events, MMC Ngobeni elaborated on measures which will be put in place to mitigate the risk in the event of another strike. Furthermore, he emphasized the importance for customers continuing to pay towards their accounts despite service interruptions.

“We are looking at promoting our current alternative channels, and explore new ways of getting our customer's their bills on time," said MMC Ngobeni.

He assured residents that alternative channels of distribution would be implemented in the new financial year.
