Do you ever wonder what happens to the big books from which JMPD officers issue traffic fines?
It’s a deal breaker for most motorists when an officer reaches out for the book and starts scribbling furiously before asking for their driver’s licences.
Contrary to rumours, the traffic fines' books are kept in storage for a certain period of time for auditing purposes and for disputes that might arise.
One of the people whose job is to ensure that JMPD officers receive and returns the fines' books is Phumla Ntlhe, who joined the City in September 2016.
“Our responsibility is to ensure that we issue the books out to JMPD officers and receive the old books that are kept in storage for some time.
“We can’t just destroy the books. Permission needs to be sought and then the JMPD will be issued with a certificate to have the books destroyed. If there’s a query about a fine issued to a motorist, we can also go back into the storage room to retrieve the book and attend to the query,” says the mother of two.
Ntlhe is part of a team that operates six days a week to ensure that if officers misplace their fines' book, they are replaced so that they can do their work effectively and efficiently.
The JMPD has six big storerooms in which the books are kept safe in the Fines Administration Department. "I’m just proud to be part of a team that makes the City of Joburg safer for motorists and residents,” says Ntlhe.
