Multinational financial services group, Discovery has taken over sponsorship rights of Joburg’s most iconic cycling event, happening on Sunday, 17 November in Fourways.
Following the inking of a multimillion rand deal, the event’s name has changed to Discovery 947 Ride Joburg.
Discovery also assumes sponsorship rights at all water points, the live television broadcast and the event’s annual expo and registration.
The 23rd annual ride through the bustling streets of Joburg, South Africa’s commercial ecosystem, starts and finishes at the Riversands Commercial Park. The event is held under the auspices of the City of Johannesburg in partnership with commercial patrons, Primedia Broadcasting and Century Property Developments.
Discovery wants to get 100-million people globally, 20 percent more active by 2025. With this vision in mind, the conglomerate has expanded the race with a brand new 40 km route to make it accessible to novice cyclists.
“For many years, this signature Joburg event has created an opportunity for people to improve their health outcomes by participating in an iconic race, and to make lasting memories along the way. We’re excited to be partnering with Primedia to grow this brilliant annual event and boost the sport of cycling in South Africa,” said Firoze Bhorat, Discovery’s Chief Marketing Officer.
The Discovery 947 Ride Joburg returns with 2018’s flipped route that spans approximately 94.7km of thrilling Joburg terrain, that cyclists get to own for a day. The gruesome challenge remains, but the spin on the ‘traditional’ route ensures that cyclists get the tough climbs out of the way while their legs are still fresh.
“I’m really thrilled to hear that Discovery is investing in [cycling]. Hope to see you all there,” said South African Road Champion and Stage 9 Tour de France Winner, Daryl Impey.
Discovery Vitality members will be able to earn 1 100 points for the 94.7km Ride Joburg and 800 points for the new 40km route.
“We are thrilled to partner with Discovery on evolving this important cycling event. Their vision of getting more people to become healthier and more active is a great fit as we encourage cycling among people of all ages and walks of life,” said Primedia’s Group Head of Events, Alexia Poulos.
The Discovery 947 Ride Joburg is the world’s second-largest timed cycling race that attracts over 30 000 cyclists each year, ranging from beginners to elites. “This race is without a doubt the most unique way to get moving and experience the diverse and vibrant landscape of Joburg,” Poulos added.
In addition to the main event, Discovery will now host the popular Mountain Bike and Kiddies rides, held the weekend before, at Steyn City.
Entries for the Discovery 947 Ride Joburg are open and will close on Friday, 4 October. For more information and to enter visit www.947ridejoburg.co.za or follow @Discovery SA on Twitter and Instagram for the latest news and updates.
