Joburgers will be treated to a massive line-up of multi-award-winning artists at this year’s Huawei Joburg Day, including Hip Hop’s upper echelon, electrifying live acts and DJs that are just as comfortable making music as they are playing it.
Billed to perform at this annual jamboree is legendary Kwaito outfit Boom-Shaka, AKA, Ricky Rick, Nasty C, Sho Madjozi, Lady Zamar, Shekinah, Goodluck, The Kiffness, DJ Maphorisa, Jack Parow, Pascal & Pearce, Prince Kaybee, Crazy White Boy and Timo ODV.
The 2019 Huawei Joburg Day is scheduled for Saturday, 7 September at the Crocodile Creek, in Lanseria, Northwest of the city.
Boom Shaka was the final act to be announced on the Huawei Joburg Day line-up. Group member Thembi Seete says their sound is authentic and that is what has kept their music relevant for over 25 years.
“When we started there was no genre to follow, it was just about creating music. We were authentic in creating our content [because we were interpreting] what was happening around us,” Seete explains.
Seete says it was events pre and post the democratic dispensation in 1994 that inspired their sound. “There was a lot of dialogue in 1994 and South Africa was gaining its freedom, this played a huge role because the music was all over, it was not difficult to write lyrics,” she says.
Made up of Seete, Junior Sokhela, Theo Nhlengethwa and Lebo Mathosa, Boom Shaka released their debut album in 1994, but their massive hit single, “It’s About Time” was released a year prior, in 1993. The pioneering Kwaito group lost its lead singer Mathosa in a tragic road accident in October 2006.
This year, 947 and Huawei will celebrate South Africa's 25 years of democracy and every Joburger.
Thando Makhunga, 947 Station Manager says the high calibre of artists slated to perform ranges across a variety of genres to celebrate the journey in South African music over the past 25 years.
“947 continues to create a world-class platform for our audiences to experience the best performers in their city,” Makhunga says.
Huawei Marketing Director for Consumer Business in South Africa, Penny Diao says the telecoms giant is all about connecting people and music is a great way to do this.
“We are excited about the upcoming Huawei Joburg Day, we look forward to creating more meaningful and lasting connections with all Joburgers as [we] celebrate 25 years of democracy with SA’s biggest musicians,” Diao says.
