On 19 February, I was informed of the arrest of two officials belonging to a City Power service provider for soliciting a bribe of R6500 from a resident in Wilropark, West of Johannesburg.

The service provider is contracted by City Power to conduct electricity disconnection services. The officials will appear in court on Thursday, 21 February 2019.

Both suspects are also set to appear in court today for the same offence, which they committed recently.

It is alleged that the official approached the Wilropark resident yesterday morning and introduced themselves as officials from the City. They allegedly told the resident that his electricity meter belonged to a house in Ruimsig (west of Johannesburg) and that it was supposed to be a three phase meter.

The suspects then threatened to disconnect the resident’s electricity supply unless he pays them R6500.
The resident agreed to pay the money to the officials but requested them to come later in the day to collect the cash.

The resident then informed the City’s Group Forensic and Investigation Services (GFIS) team which set up a sting operation together with the members of the South African Police Service (SAPS).

The officials arrived at house in Wilropark yesterday afternoon to collect the cash. SAPS then apprehended the suspects in the wrongful act.

I commend the resident who refused to be part of any corrupt activity and reported the matter to our team and acted swiftly.

Corruption has no place in this administration and we will work tirelessly, and in collaboration with law enforcement agencies, to ensure that the residents of Johannesburg receive the quality services they deserve.

I encourage residents to report any fraud and corruption activities through our 24hour tipoff hotline 0800 002 587 or visit the GFIS offices situated at 48 Ameshoff Street in Braamfontein.
