The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has welcomed 28 new sergeants into its ranks.

The 24 female and four male JMPD officers were honoured officially with the rank of JMPD Sergeants at the Public Safety Headquarters in Martindale on Friday, 1 February.

JMPD Chief David Tembe dressed the chevrons shields on the new sergeants, who were congratulated and welcomed into the force by the MMC for Public Safety, Michael Sun.

The sergeants will now be responsible for, amongst others, inspecting parades and ensuring their colleagues are properly dressed in uniform, and equipped for the operation ahead. They will also conduct quality control checks on the performance of their colleagues. The position is managerial in nature and comes with huge operational and management responsibilities.

MMC Sun told the Sergeants that they were not only promoted in rank but also given more responsibilities to ensure residents of the City are safe.

“You have the responsibility to ensure members in your command perform their functions optimally. You need to ensure that your members return to the parade safely and you need to take care of yourself. We as the City are extremely proud of your well-earned achievement and wish you strength in your new appointment,” the MMC said.

The newly appointed sergeants will begin their functions immediately.
