Marshy and lush reeds not only add beauty to our city, but also play a vital role in purifying and sustaining our environment for years to come.
In its effort to raise awareness about a critical resource (water), Johannesburg Zoo, in collaboration with BirdLife South Africa, Rand Water, Toyota and the Rare Finch Conservation Group bring you the Flufftail Festival.
This event, which will be held at the Johannesburg Zoo on Friday, 8 February and Saturday, 9 February 2019, from 9am to 1pm, will give about 260 Grade 6 pupils from various schools in Johannesburg, who will be bussed to the World Wetlands Day celebrations and the Flufftail Festival.
Pupils will learn about the value of water, wetlands and water birds. With less than 250 birds left, the white-winged Flufftail is an extremely rare wetland bird.
“Conservation of wetlands and education will therefore be demonstrated through the various interactive and exciting exhibitions available to participants. Learners will be exploring and gaining much needed information about the importance of wetlands, including hands-on water testing activities, interactive games and quizzes,” says City Parks and Zoo’s Jenny Moodley.
