The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) has appointed Delta Built Environment Consultants to conduct a feasibility study for the development of social housing in Milpark.

Postgraduate architecture students from the University of Johannesburg and Wits University were invited to submit proposals as part of a competition arranged over two rounds.

The City of Johannesburg’s Council approved the Milpark Urban Design Framework in 2016. It entails the establishment of new developments around the large institutional presence in the area, which include the public broadcaster SABC, UJ, Wits and Media 24. New development is envisaged for this precinct, most of which should be high-rise buildings.

The shortlisted candidates will have the opportunity to develop their concept designs with a professional architect accredited by the South African Council for the Architectural Profession and attend a workshop for housing design to further their competition entries.

“The City is committed to the co-production of solutions in urban design and the creation of spaces and places. We continue to draw on our established partnerships with professional bodies and the academic fraternity to extend co-production opportunities in the process of spatially restructuring Johannesburg,” said Member of Mayoral Committee for Development Planning Cllr Reuben Masango.

Four groups, two from each university, will be shortlisted after an initial general entry round to compete in the second round competition.

The winner will be announced on 9 August 2019.
