Organisers of the MTN Walk the Talk with 702 have urged motorists to take note of wide-ranging road closures ahead of the world’s biggest walking event on Sunday, 28 July at Marks Park Sports Club in leafy Emmarentia.

More than 50 000 walkers of all fitness levels and abilities will participate in the four categories of the event, including the 25km walk for democracy, a 15km walk around Joburg’s iconic landmarks; an 8km walk, and a 5km fun walk for the whole family and their canine friends.

The safety of participants is paramount to the City, that’s why the Executive Mayor Herman Mashaba, has sanctioned the closure of several arterial roads from 4am until 2pm.

Road closures will be managed to ensure minimal obstruction to traffic and roads will be re-opened as soon as the intersection is clear of walkers.

“Participants are urged not to follow the directions of unauthorized car guards directing them to park in the road as they may be expected to pay, and the event cannot ensure security in these areas,” say event organisers.

The municipality has already thrown its full weight behind the annual event organised under the auspices of the City in partnership with multinational telecommunications corporation, MTN, and Primedia broadcaster – Talk Radio 702.

The MTN Walk the Talk with 702 is now in its 18th successful year. It dovetails with the City’s objective to promote a culture of healthier lifestyles and foster social cohesion. As a result, the municipality will provide a full basket of services through its departments and entities to ensure the event is successful.

Free, secure parking will be available at the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens, to be accessed off Thomas Bowler Avenue, from Beyers Naude Drive, on the day. A Park and Ride service is also available to walkers from various points from R80 – R100 and can be booked on the Walk the Talk website. Only pre-ordered tickets will be valid.

Residents in the affected areas are asked to familiarise themselves with the road closures.
