Construction of the multi-million rand Johannesburg International Transport Interchange facility is back on track following the appointment of a new contractor.

The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA), on behalf of the City of Johannesburg, is project managing construction at the facility, which will accommodate long-distance and cross-border taxis and buses, create various economic opportunities through retail facilities, provide social amenities for inner city users and residents, and provide a high-quality commuter environment.

The construction of the facility had been delayed by land negotiations and the fact that the leading joint venture partner of the main contractor on the project filed for business rescue in June 2018. This led to the termination of the previous contractor and the procurement of a new one.

The project, which falls within Ward 60 in Region F of the City of Johannesburg, is expected to usher in a new era for long distance travellers, with amenities to make departure and arrival a pleasant experience.

Once completed, the four-storey facility will boast an impressive 3 100 square metres of retail space, which includes 160 informal trading stalls. It will feature holding space for 648 taxis; ranking space for 158 taxis and ranking for 20 buses.

“The interchange will create a more organised environment for transport service providers and also go a long way in providing secure informal trading spaces,” said Member of the Mayoral Committee for Transport, Cllr Nohlanhla Makhuba.

The project is being implemented for the City’s Department of Transport by the JDA.

Member of Mayoral Committee for Development Planning Cllr Reuben Masango said: “From a planning perspective, construction of this facility will add an aesthetically appealing element to the city skyline while providing a solution to the shortage of ranking facilities within the inner city, as well as a centrally located facility for commuters.”
