Construction of Merafe Railway Station project has resumed after it was temporarily halted following the death of a 14-year-old boy whose body was found in one of the trenches of the construction site last month.

The Joburg Development Agency (JDA), as required by law, shut down operations at the construction site and reported the incident to the Department of Labour for investigations.

An unaffected portion of the site was reopened on Friday, June 14, following the investigation by the Department of Labour, which revealed that there were no contraventions by the contractor and that all the safety measures were followed by the contractor on site in relation to the incident.

The JDA is implementing public environment upgrades at the railway station on behalf of the City of Johannesburg’s Department of Transport.

The main objective of this project is to upgrade pedestrian walkways connecting to all Metrorail Stations in Soweto in order to improve pedestrian mobility to allow for safer movement between different amenities and integration with the public transport facilities.

The upgrade of the railway station aims to meet local needs and mitigate movement challenges of the communities in Soweto. The project has created jobs and transferred skills to SMMEs and local labourers from Merafe community that were employed on the project.
