The annual Maimane Alfred Phiri (MAP) games will commence as the last 32 seniors’ play-offs kick off this weekend at the Rotary Grounds in Alexandra.

The tournament has grown over the years, with teams travelling across the country to participate to a good brand of township football.

Hundreds of fans from the City of Johannesburg townships will descend to Alexandra, affectionately known as “Gomora”, in northern Johannesburg to witness local soccer at its best.

The City is among the key sponsors of the tournament. Other partners include Africa Meter Reading, Daily Sun, Umso Construction and Engineering, Alex FM, SuperSport, Betway, Bayport, Boston City and Soweto Gold.

This year’s 19th edition draw for the remaining 32 teams took place on Tuesday, 25 June, at Alexandra Mall with the senior men’s final scheduled for 21 July 2019. It was attended by some former professional footballers like Brian Baloyi, Jabulani Mendu, Isaac Mabotsa and Tlou Segolela. Over years the MAP games have also attracted top football stars like Pollen Ndlanya, Mark Williams, Teko Modise, Jabu Mahlangu, Thuso Phala and coach Steve Komphela.

“All the preparations are going well and now it is all systems go,” said Alfred Phiri, the well-travelled former Bafana Bafana, SuperSport United, Jomo Cosmos and Mokora Swallows midfielder.

“We must give more attention and support to these tournaments if we are serious about football development and the future of the sport. We call on parents and the community at large to come in their numbers to watch these kids playing,” said Phiri.

All matches will be played at Rotary Grounds corner 5th Avenue and Alfred Nzo Street, Alexandra.
