Johannesburg Water has started a R10 million sewer pipe upgrade and rehabilitation in Cosmo City Ext 2, Region A.

This project was aimed at putting an end to the constant sewerage blockage that has been in existence for over a year, which was unsightly and posed a health risk on the main road of the township.

The contractor has already established a site and the Johannesburg Water teams were constantly monitoring progress by ensuring that a jet truck flushes the manhole and the line daily to alleviate pressure. The contractor was expected to complete the upgrade by October 2019.

The project was initiated due to complaints about a failing sewer network from the community of Cosmo City Ext 2, which led to the City of Johannesburg taking action. These complaints were confirmed by Johannesburg Water operations (Randburg Depot) as a serious concern requiring urgent intervention.

The Cosmo City Ext 2 area was experiencing constant pipe blockages and overflowing manholes, posing health risks and affecting their standards of living. The pipes used are bigger in diameter than the ones that were originally inserted, this is in order to lessen the occurrence of sewer blockages.

A 200mm diameter uPVC pipe will be upgraded to a 300mm uPVC pipe for approximately 850m, and a 300mm diameter uPVC pipe to a 400mm diameter uPVC pipe for approximately 1050m.

Residents of Cosmo City are urged not to flush any foreign objects into the system.
