Johannesburg’s Executive Mayor, Cllr Herman Mashaba, yesterday unveiled the new street names in Sunrise Park, Doornkop, Soweto.
The project is part of the City’s plans to name all the street that do not have names.
The naming of streets is important because it adds to a sense of community and ownership by the people.
“Street renaming is about restoring the dignity of our people, and today is a testament that the current administration of the City of Johannesburg is committed to restoring the dignity of our people,” said Mayor Mashaba, who was accompanied by the MMC for Community Development, Cllr Nonhlanhla Sifumba and the MMC for Public Safety, Cllr Michael Sun.
Naming is also an important element of service delivery as it promotes legibility and facilitates the effective delivery of services such as policing, emergency services and billing for services consumed.
Mayor Mashaba said the City is meeting its commitments to improve the provision of basic services. He said gone are the days where residents of Ward 53 had to wait for an ambulance at a busy intersection just because the emergency service could not locate the address of where the services are required.
The process of naming the streets of Doornkop Extension 1 started in 2013 with an extensive public consultation process. Street meetings were convened where residents made submissions and inputs of recommended street names for the areas.
Ward 53 covers parts of Sunrise Park, Doornkop, Green Village and Lufhereng. Lack of street name in the areas hindered the provision of basic services. It was a challenge when it comes to emergency services, the response times are delayed because time was spent trying to locate a property, situated in a street which does not have a name.
