Thokoza Park in Moroka, Soweto, became the first recipient of an outdoor TV screen after Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Community Development Cllr Nonhlanhla Sifumba switched on the telly at the weekend.
The City of Johannesburg plans to roll out at least nine outdoor digital screens in some of the parks dotted around the seven regions.
Addressing mostly Joburg City Parks and Zoo officials and sponsors, MMC Sifumba thanked them for making the project a success and for always putting residents first.
“I’d also like to thank the people of Rockville and surrounding areas close to Thokoza Park who have partnered with the City to ensure that this a safe and incident-free family area.
“This is indeed your park and you have made sure that it’s well-looked after. I urge you to keep up the good work of ensuring the park is spotless and to adhere to the City rules,” said MMC Sifumba.
The screens will be used to broadcast some live sports games through a partnership with View Africa Broadcasting. The screens will also broadcast socially uplifting content such as education programmes, community notices and family orientated entertainment. More screens are to be installed at other City parks.
Some residents who were already at the park said they were gearing up to watch Saturday’s Soweto derby between archrivals Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates thanked the City for upgrading the infrastructure in the park.
“We could also do with some lights. This park doesn’t have lights and it’s dangerous after sunset,” said Samson Masondo, who was chilling with his friend from Daveyton, Muzi Radebe.
Several members of a Tshiawelo-based burial society said they always use Thokoza Park for their monthly meetings and now it was a bonus that there was a big screen TV to follow Premier Soccer League football. Khanyisile Nkosi and her family said the City should consider installing more toilets at the park. “When the park is full during the festive season, there’s always a queue of people wanting to use the only existing toilet. We need more so that we can chill in peace in the park,” said Nkosi.
