The Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Councillor Herman Mashaba, has expressed gratitude to Joburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) for working hard to deliver services to Joburg residents despite a lack of resources.
Mayor Mashaba and Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Public Safety Cllr Michael Sun and MMC for Group Corporate and Shared Services Cllr Dr Ntombi Khumalo took delivery of five firefighting vehicles and officially launched a new Joburg emergency number on Wednesday, 6 November 2019.

“Your profession is one of the toughest but you do it with a passion, dedication and professionalism. I would like to thank you for saving people’s live,” Mayor Mashaba said.
The five state-of-the-art vehicles include two air trucks, two level 2 incident command vehicles and a hazardous materials unit.
The City has received 20 firefighting vehicles out of 92 fire engines, with the rest to be delivered at the end of November and December. In September, the City received 15 vehicles.
Cllr Sun says this vehicles are a symbol of the City’s commitment to serving the residents of Joburg by making resources available. “It was not easy to get this fleet of vehicles. When we came we found things broken and we couldn’t fix them overnight. What you see today is results of dedication and hard work. To EMS employees, please go out and save the lives of Joburg residents.”
Cllr Sun also announced that a new emergency number for Joburg residents, which is 107. The new 107 emergency number will be routed to the City’s Public Safety call centre for all emergencies. The 10177, 117, 10177 and 011 375 5911 numbers will still be functional while the 107 number is being phased in with the aim to make it the only number for emergencies by the end of January 2020.
Cllr Khumalo says that the City is committed to making sure that it provides top technology resources to its employees for them to deliver high standard services to residents.
