While theatre makers and practitioners stay safe behind the closed doors due to the national lockdown, the curtains opened on Facebook for the announcement of the Naledi Award Nominees. 

The Naledi Awards are in their 17th year and are the premier theatre awards in South Africa. This year’s gala awards ceremony is scheduled to take place on 25 May 2020.

These nominations are for productions that took place in 2019 and Joburg City Theatres​ is honoured to have collaborated with the some of these productions with renowned and internationally acclaimed producers and companies.  

The nominations for the Naledi Theatre Awards are as follows:

Soweto Theatre

Best production of a play
Pockets of Knowledge
Best breakthrough performance
Anele Nene as Malusi (Pockets of Knowledge)

Soweto Theatre is inspired by the performance of this production that was produced as a partnership. The nomination further supports the notion that emerging creators should be supported through partnerships and mutually beneficial relationships. 

Joburg Theatre

Best contemporary dance/ballet production
Cion: Requiem of Ravel’s Bolero Produced by Vuyani Dance Theatre & Joburg Theatre 
Best featured/supporting actress in a musical
Noni Mkhonto for her role as Henrietta Hen in Jack and the Beanstalk

Congratulations to Aunty Merle The Musical that was presented at the Joburg Theatre in 2019 for bagging seven nominations in different categories including best production of a musical. Special mention goes to our resident company manager, Timothy le Roux, for his nomination for best director of a musical – Rock Of Ages. 

We also extend our congratulations to Peoples Theatre’s, Thokozani Jiyane as Marty the Zebra in Madagascar, A Musical Adventure in the category best performance in a production for young audiences (male/female supported by Assitej SA).
