As the City of Johannesburg’s political leadership continued its efforts of providing food to the most vulnerable, including waste pickers, officials from Health Region F visited the community of Mangolongolo Informal Settlement in Ward 65 near Jeppe Hostel to conduct Covid-19 screening and testing session.

This included vaccination for influenza, health education and the sharing of social services information such as how to apply for old age and child grants.

More than 20 officials from the City, who included staff from pest control, environmental health and personal health, received a warm welcome despite the cold weather at Mangolongolo. The session kicked off from 9am and ran up to 1pm.

Mangolongolo residents were urged to practise social distancing and all City officials were wearing protective clothing. The residents came in numbers despite the cold weather. A total of 178 people were vaccinated for flu. Those who were screened for Covid-19 were about 250 and those who were tested for Covid-19 were 24.

The Member of the Mayoral Committee for Health and Social Development in the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Eunice Mgcina, flanked by the Member of the Mayoral Committee for Group Corporate and Shared Services, Cllr Loyiso Masuku, made an unannounced visit to the session.

MMC Mgcina thanked staff for ensuring that services continue, especially for the most vulnerable members of society.

“I’m proud that the City’s essential services workers are going all out to ensure that much-needed services do indeed reach our people. Thank you for taking care of our residents and making the City of Johannesburg a truly world-class African city,” said MMC Mgcina.

Regional Health Manager Oupa Montsioa thanked all the stakeholders who donated soap. They include Pick n Pay Panorama, Maggie’s Spar in Mulbarton, Pick n Pay Mall of the South and Whitey Chemicals.

“Thank you for all the donations. This generous gesture shows that this is not only the burden of the government but is for everyone,” said Montsioa.

The next Region F Health blitz will be on Wednesday, 15 April 2020, at Denver Hostel.
