The late Sister Ntsoaki Senokwanyane was a selfless soldier in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic and one of many frontline workers in the healthcare profession who risk their lives in the battle against the novel coronavirus to save others.
This is the tribute Cllr Eunice Mgcina, the MMC for Health and Social Development has paid to the late Sister Senokwanyane, whom she described as dedicated and committed to her job.
The professional nurse who served Soweto’s Protea Glen Clinic in Region D died a week ago after a short illness and has been laid to rest this week.
“I wish to convey my special and sincere gratitude to all healthcare professionals throughout the City for their dedication in providing support to our people,” says Cllr Mgcina.
The MMC notes that despite Johannesburg being the epicentre of Covid-19 in the country, it is healthcare practitioners on the frontline who bring hope and often prioritise the health of scores of others over their own. About 20 City nurses have contracted Covid-19 in the course of duty.
“I am particularly grateful for the work that our healthcare professionals are carrying out during this time and I wish to implore them to continue to take care of themselves and to always know that as the City, we will continue to support them in any way we can,” Mgcina says.
The City of Joburg offers a full basket of health services at its 80 clinics, including antenatal care, family planning, adult curative and chronic treatment with a doctor’s support, mother and child healthcare, reproductive healthcare, immunisation and growth monitoring.
Treatment for the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV/Aids is also on offer, as is the treatment for sexually transmitted infections and tuberculosis. There is also cancer screening and diagnosis and voluntary HIV counselling and testing.
Cllr Mgcina pleads with City nurses to remain vigilant and continue playing their part by maintaining social distancing, wearing facemasks at all times, washing hands with soap and water or sanitising regularly.
“These protocols should be adhered to at work and outside of work. I applaud City nurses for remaining faithful to their oath of service.”
She encourages City nurses to keep true to their profession and not to lose passion for keeping people healthy.
