The Public Safety Department has reopened three more Licensing Centres, bringing the total number of operational facilities in Johannesburg to eight.
The three include Langlaagte MVRA, DLTC and mini bulk, southwest of the Inner City; Randburg DLTC in the north; and Florida DLTC on the west rand.
Mally Mokoena, the MMC for Public Safety says centres billed for future reopening include Midrand DLTC & MVRA as well as Randburg MVRA.
“They will reopen once they have met the required Covid-19 health measures,” Mokoena adds.
The MMC notes that all open licensing centres will offer limited services due to the backlog experienced during the lockdown and because the centres are still working with a third of their staff members.
“The MVRA work to be prioritised will be limited to the registration of vehicles and the renewal of motor vehicle licence discs while DLTCs will focus on the renewal of driving licences and professional driving permits,” she explains.
Customers whose new driving licences are ready for collection will also be assisted, Mokoena adds. DLTCs will only serve clients who have made an online booking.
All other DLTC services, including new applications for learner's or driving tests, application for duplicate learners’ licences and the conversion of driving licences in terms of section 23 of the NRTA have been put on hold until full recovery. The Helpdesk functions will be resumed.
Licensing Centres are open to the public between 8:30am and 3pm during the week and between 8:30am and 2pm on Saturdays and public holidays.
“Car-jamming and touting continues to be a safety concern for clients visiting our Licensing Centres. I urge our customers to consistently check if cars are locked after pressing their remotes before walking away and to be weary of friendly strangers offering cheap and quick services,” Mokoena says.
She urges customers to only accept assistance from officials who are clearly identifiable or are behind the counter.
