The City has expressed condolences to the family of a pedestrian who died after allegedly being knocked down by a Rea Vaya bus in Booysens on Thursday, 25 June.
The pedestrian was reportedly crossing the Soweto Motorway at the time of the accident and there were no further injuries to passengers on-board the T1 bus south of Joburg.
The City’s Transport Department says the deceased was declared dead on the scene after being attended by the JMPD and EMS personnel.
“Medical assistance was offered on the scene to the middle-aged man but unfortunately we lost him,” says Nonhlanhla Makhuba, the MMC for Transport.
The Rea Vaya T1 bus was travelling from the Joburg CBD to Thokoza Park in Soweto when the accident happened. Alternative arrangements had to be made to ferry commuters on-board the bus involved in the accident to the Thokoza Park station.
“We are deeply distressed by the loss of life and injuries of road users. We urge drivers and pedestrians to be extra careful and obey the rules of the road at all times to avoid accidents,” Makhuba says.
The City’s Transport department awaits the accident report from the JMPD and the affected bus operating company, Piotrans.
