After a couple of teething technical problems, the first-ever virtual Council meeting in the City of Joburg started, albeit 10 minutes later than originally planned to accommodate all the link-ups on Friday, 29 May.

Presiding over the historic meeting in a virtually empty Council Chamber, Speaker of Council Cllr Nonceba Molwele called for silence before proceedings could commence amid the screeching sounds of microphones being muted and unmuted.

All in all a total of 215 councillors were in attendance from their homes, committee rooms at the Metro Centre and just under 10 others in the Council Chamber. The meeting took over an hour and most of the matters on the agenda were concluded.

The councillors approved the draft 2020/21 Integrated Development Plan (IDP).

Speaker Cllr Molwele thanked everyone for participating and urged them to continue to wear face masks, wash their hands properly and practice social distancing to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

The next virtual council meeting will be announced after councillors have undergone further training.
