City Power is reviewing security measures at its substations following an incident in which four security officers were assaulted, and one shot in the neck, during a robbery at one of its substations.

The security officers, employed by Mafoko Security, were posted for night shift last week at Prospect substation, near City Deep.

City Power CEO Lerato Setshedi has condemned the attack and called for a review of security measures at all the substations. Our thoughts are with the families of the injured and we wish them a speedy recovery.

It is reported that they were confronted by three individuals who had jumped the perimeter fence of the substation, during loadshedding between 23h00 and 24h00, in order to gain access. The four were held up at gun point and assaulted before being robbed of their cell phones and pocket money.

One of the security officers managed to escape to seek help during the ordeal, while the other three were assaulted. One of the three security officers was shot in the neck at close range – and is in critical condition in hospital.

The suspects were disturbed by two City Power operators who went to the substation to restore power after loadshedding, only to find no response. The suspects fled the scene upon seeing the City Power vehicle.

The police were called to the scene and a case was opened at Cleveland police station.
