The City’s Expanded Social Package (ESP) Special Project Unit has re-opened eight registration sites after months of inactivity as a result of the Covid-19 lockdown. The eight sites are the first of a two-phase re-opening process.
The ESP is designed to help residents who meet predetermined criteria to access subsidies on water, electricity and for property owners, rebates on rates, sanitation and refuse.
The ESP also expands to include entry to other services and programmes such as food parcels, skills development and displaced persons’ services.
The MMC for Health and Social Development, Cllr Eunice Mgcina says about 110, 100 indigent households were assisted through the ESP programme in the 2019/2020 financial year.
“The sites identified for re-opening during phase 1 experienced high registration in-take before Covid-19 and have been prioritised,” says Cllr Mgcina.
Residents have the option to register in person at any of the centres to access ESP programmes. Those who do not have data, access to technology or who do not know how to access the online registration form will be given first preference.
“The ESP is a pro-poor programme aimed at assisting the most vulnerable individuals within the City thereby ensuring that individuals become economically self-reliant, and ultimately uplift themselves beyond government grants,” the MMC says
Poor individuals and the households they form part of can access an array of services offered by the City for an improved quality of life, she adds.
The registration offices listed below resumed operations on 15 October 2020 and other registration offices will re-open during phase 2, upon conclusion of the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) recruitment process.
