The City of Johannesburg Executive Mayor Cllr Geoffrey Makhubo’s first shot at Firethorn Course at Randpark Golf Club marked Joburg Open’s official tee off earlier today.
The Joburg Open, one of the most prestigious golf tournaments on Sunshine Tour and European Tour schedules, is the first international golf tournament following lockdown hosted by the City of Johannesburg and boasts a prize fund of R19.5 million.

Mayor Makhubo said this year’s tournament will showcase the City’s ability to host world-class events to millions of TV viewers worldwide and that will attract investors into the City.
“I am delighted to officially tee off the 2020 Joburg Open. The success of this tournament over the years affirms Joburg as a world-class African city and making Joburg a better place to live, work and play.
“Now more than ever, as our economy requires a boost following the Covid-19 lockdown and with our president publicly calling for a new business stimulus, the return of the Joburg Open is perfectly timed to contribute significantly towards this cause as it brings a major international event to our city once again,” said Mayor Makhubo after the official opening of the tournament.
He expressed his sincere thanks and appreciation to the Sunshine Tour and European Tour, sponsors and organisers for pulling a Covid-19 compliant tournament under stringent lockdown regulations and protocols set out for non-contact sports.
Mayor Makhubo wished all the golfers the best of luck as they battle it out for top honours.
The Joburg Open, which ends on Sunday, 22 November, is the only tournament in South Africa that gives the top three placers direct entry into The British Open, the world’s most prestigious golf tournament.
