​Although Cervical Cancer Awareness Month is observed globally in January, South Africa commemorates it in September. The month raises awareness about prevention, screening and early detection. Cervical cancer is largely preventable and can be successfully treated when detected early. Persistent infection with high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) is the primary cause of cervical cancer.

South Africa has committed to eliminating cervical cancer as a public health problem by 2030, in line with the World Health Organisation's 90–70–90 targets: vaccinating 90% of girls against HPV by age 15, screening 70% of women with a high-performance test by ages 25 and 55 and ensuring that 90% of women diagnosed with pre-cancer receive early treatment

.The National Department of Health's 2026 framework notes that South Africa has transitioned nationally to HPV-DNA-based screening, while continuing to expand access to vaccination, screening and treatment services.

The City of Johannesburg, in partnership with stakeholders such as PinkDrive, regularly conducts cancer screening initiatives, giving members of the public access to screening for breast, cervical and prostate cancers.

​Residents are encouraged to use available screening services and speak to a healthcare professional about the right screening option for them. Screening can identify cervical changes before they develop into cancer, while HPV vaccination helps prevent infection with HPV types that can cause cervical cancer. City of Johannesburg MMC for Health, Cllr Ennie Makhafola, urges women to take charge of their health by making use of available healthcare services.

“Women are encouraged to prioritise their health by accessing screening services and seeking medical advice when they have concerns. Early detection and appropriate treatment can save lives."
