The City of Johannesburg honoured Mama Sophie Williams De Bruyn, the only surviving original organiser of the historic 1956 Women's March, at a special High Tea Brunch at Joburg Theatre on Friday, 14 August 2026. Hosted by the Office of the MMC for Community Development as part of Women's Month, the event marked the 70th anniversary of the march to the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956, when thousands of women united against discriminatory pass laws.

Seventy women gathered under the theme “70 Women for 70 Years", celebrating seven decades of courage, resilience and the enduring legacy of the women of 1956, while paying tribute to Mama Sophie's contribution to South Africa.

The occasion brought together struggle icons, community leaders and women who continue to benefit from the legacy of the 1956 generation. Mama Sophie also presented her book, which aims to educate younger generations about the historic march and its significance.

The celebration included music and dance, with legendary performer Mama Abigail Kubheka serenading the women in attendance.

MMC for Community Development Cllr Thapelo Amad said the celebration was intended to connect the women of 1956 with those of 2026. “The greatest tribute we can pay to the women of 1956 is not simply to tell their story. It is to continue their work."

Cllr Amad said the City had a responsibility to ensure that the legacy of the women of 1956 was reflected in the lived experiences of women today, including through safer communities and stronger social cohesion.

Mama Sophie, despite her frail appearance, remained vibrant and strong as she took guests down memory lane, recounting the events that led to the historic march. She spoke of women from different races and backgrounds who, despite having limited resources, united around a common cause. Their courage, she said, helped shape the democratic South Africa enjoyed today. She also reflected on challenges facing the country today and offered words of advice to political leaders.
