Doping creates an unfair advantage and can have serious physical and emotional consequences for athletes. This was the key message at an anti-doping awareness event hosted by the City of Johannesburg at Danie van Zyl Recreation Centre on 5 September 2026. Athletes and coaches from boxing, taekwondo, football and golf participated in anti-doping education sessions as part of their sporting programmes. The initiative highlighted the importance of protecting the integrity of sport, promoting fair play and equipping athletes with the knowledge to make informed decisions.

Nerice Swanepoel of the South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS) led the sessions, providing information on the Anti-Doping Code, testing procedures, health risks and possible disciplinary consequences.

“Doping in sport is a transgression, and when caught, you are suspended from competing or participating in sports activities, with periods ranging from two years to a lifetime," Swanepoel said.

She also reminded participants that anti-doping regulations apply not only to athletes, but also to support personnel such as parents, coaches and managers, who may face sanctions for violations.

Athletes were introduced to the institute's online medication check tool, which allows competitors to check whether medicines or substances are prohibited before using them. Bongi Martins, assistant coach at Undisputed Boxing Academy in Ennerdale, welcomed the practical information and resources shared during the programme.

“I learned a lot about doping and that there is a way to find out which drugs are prohibited. Information is readily available, and there is a list for that. I will share this with my boxers because it is important to them," Martins said.

Swanepoel also engaged athletes and spectators in the venue halls during breaks, reinforcing the importance of understanding anti-doping rules and responsibilities. Community Development's Dr Karabo Semenya reiterated the City's commitment to promoting fair play, clean sport and the health and wellbeing of athletes.

The programme, facilitated by Danie van Zyl Recreation Centre Facility Manager Stella Manamela, Region B, provided an opportunity to take anti-doping education directly to sporting communities. The City will continue supporting initiatives that promote safe, ethical and inclusive participation in sport, while ensuring athletes, coaches and sporting support personnel have access to information that helps protect the integrity of competition.
